Yes, the Z06 is faster than the current M Coupe and will probably be a tick faster than the new one. If the new M3 is used as a bench mark the Z06 is only 1/10th faster to 60 and a few 10ths on the quarter mile. Then new M Coupe will probably at least match the M3s performance, even with the 5spd and 18 fewer ponies. The tested numbers for the Turbo 911 in Car and Driver put the 911 faster than the Z06 in most categories, but not by a lot. As these cars are that close different tests will have different winners.

My point is we are talking about two different thorough breds here. They are both sports cars. If the numbers are critical to a buyer than that is what they should use to make their decision.

However, the ponderous focusing on track numbers for a street car misses the point. These are both great cars and people should enjoy either one.

I do think that your point is valid in that for many buyers the increase in performance of the top of the line Vette compared to the traditional Super Cars (Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini etc) has brought them more into the comparison fray. Though my guess is that most 911 Turbo, Ferrari and Lamborghini buyers and not going to jump ship. In a market sense the Z06 does compete with the normally aspirated 911, Boxter S, M Coupe/Roadster. It really should not be a competitor for purchasing the M3, or M5 for that matter, as they are totally different cars, though they do make for comparisons that people like paying money to read about.
