Pictures from the Mines Road Run this past weekend (archive)

We started our run in Livermore (CA for those not familiar with California) and took our chances on Mines
road. Two days ago, I heard reports of Mines Road being closed due to heavy rains and snow (during that big
rain us Californians experienced recently). So, I warned everyone that we could be traveling quite a ways
only to come to a closed road and would have to turn around. The group decided to take a chance and we did.

We tackled Mines Road and was a lot of fun. But there was a portion of the road (approx. 50 miles into the
run) that basically said

"Road Closed except to residents"

So, seeing that it was clear, we just plowed right through. Being that the road was closed (two days ago, I can
understand, but today was really sunny), there was no one on our lane and no one approaching from the
opposite direction.

The turns were fun. One of the cars in our group had a passenger who started to get feel sick from all the
twisting and turning and had to drop out from the group (hope she feels better). The rest continued on.

As we got closer and started climbing up the Mt. Hamilton, the temperature dropped and snow started
showing itself on the side until the road itself was covered in snow. For a moment, I thought "Maybe we
should have heeded the sign".

I got further worried as we saw two Sheriff Ford Trucks coming down the mountain. I got on the radio and
warned everyone, but the Sheriffs just drove right past us. Made it to the top and the view was incredible.

As we started to descend down the mountain, traffic was blocked on the opposite lane and no cars were
allowed to come up Mt. Hamilton. Then a parade of BMWs show their heads coming down (everyone probably
wondering how we got up there to begin with). The policeman halting traffic on the opposite side stopped our
group. I thought this is where we might have been busted, but he was nice and just wanted to comment on our
cars and let us proceed.

A very nice day indeed for a drive.
