Gas is blended at refineries for seasonal requirements. There could easily be a 5% or more spread in BTUs per pound of gas depending on when and where it was made. And the additives each brand puts in their tanker trucks are usually different.

Plus the same gallon of gas has a lower AKI (anti-knock index) at higher altitudes than lower; premium gas out west up high is typically 91 AKI than the same brand at 93 AKI back east or at sea level on the west coast. Gas out west ain't lower quality than back east; it just doesn't get as high an octane rating because the air's thinner.
