After the first problem with my car, which was caused by rain, I was obviously very careful not to spray into the brake duct opening when washing the car. Somehow some moisture was still sucked up into the intake, and I had a re-occurence of the engine problem twice prior to the opening being closed off.
I think that with proper oiling of the filter, and with the "sock", careful washing and driving in the rain should not be a problem. Running the car through a carwash would be another matter.
When I talked with the Dinan Service Rep., they were very interested and concerned about my situation, and asked me to talk with their Tech. Dept. They had been working on this "sock", a Gor-Tex -like fabric device, because they had run into this problem in a number of other instances.
They did not say that the hole in the brake duct was against their installation instructions, but did indicated that it was not necessary to have the opening, since enough 'cool" air swirls around the lower portion of the engine bay.
If you look at CART cars, they have an air scoop on the right rear "fender" for air intake, even when it rains. This whole deal about not being able to run in the rain still seems strange to me.
It may be my imagination, but it seems like there is just slightly less roar and engine grunt since the modifications.......
