Don't even think about the trunk area. And front seat with airbags is also out. For one thing, these alternatives are illegal ANYWHERE. More importantly, these alternatives are death traps for both infant and driver.

I have 2 lovely girls and only the older one (a big 10 yo) is allowed in the front seat of any car. Rule of thumb is that if a kid's shoulder (or any person) is noticeably below the top of the back rest (not headrest), then a booster is required (and therefore no front seat). Something to do with the seatbelt cutting into the collar/neck and that can be fatal.

You will have a few years to put up with this. Meantime, a safe Volvo (6.6sec)/Audi Turbo (6.2 sec) will have to be the next best choice without breaking one's bank. If money is no object, then M3, M5, CLK 55, CLK 430 in that order.
