BMW engines are typically spec'd with a variation of -1% to +10%. This means that real world horse power ratings can range from 238-264hp. Moreover, since the engines' output most likely follow a Gaussian distribution, and believing that that range cover a 6-sigma variance, the typical output of an E36 M engine is about 254hp.
