Actually, I was going by the Edmunds web site which indicated that Metallic SteelGgray was in fact a 2000 color:

Are they mistaken? Of course, you are right about the 2.8 I even know that, just had a brain burp.

2000 Z3 Coupe (2.8 pref) Steel Gray/Blk,

2.8 is the only way they come.
Available colors for 2000 were:
300 Alpine White
314 Bright Red
668 Jet Black
354 Titanium Silver Metallic
430 Ocford Green Metallic
364 Topaz Blue Metallic
303 Cosmos Black Metallic

Automatic for sale.
Automatics will also be a little hard to find though I think there are currently a couple on BMWs CPO site.

what's the best way to unearth something this specific (besides here)? On that note, haven't heard anything abour steel gray metallic... any pics?

Try EDmunds Marketplace, BMW CPO site, Autotrader, Cars.com, Ebay motors....others that don't spring to mind. Again, you won't find a steel gray unless it's custom.
