Ok, I've tested these now for 2 nights (one of which it was raining)...and I must say it is a worthwhile improvement in light output.

Per Bart B.'s suggestion, I purchased a pair of Sylvania 9005 (65w) high-beam bulbs from my local Kragen store. In their stock form the 9005 bulbs won't fit the 9006 socket...but with a quick cutting of one of the tabs around the outside of the bulb, and a slight modification to the actual connector (which will still take 9006 bulbs after being modified), it fits perfectly.

The 9005 bulbs are rated at 1700 lumens as compared to 1000 for the 9006. While no where near the intensity of a Xenon bulb, its better than stock. The beam pattern remains essentially the same, although I believe it may light up the sides a bit better now. And I don't believe they cause any more glare than normal lamps (or at least less than Xenon). Oh, and the light seems to be a tad more white than before...or maybe its just because its more intense?

For $17 it was a nice easy upgrade...
