How does the Traction Control Work? (archive)

I understand that the traction control pulses the brakes. Does this mean that if I heavily accelerate and the traction light comes on that I am essentially burning up my rear brakes? Does the traction control reduce throttle?

Is it not wise to get the best acceleration by stomping the pedal and holding it down?

TIA
