with an upholstery tool designed to pop them off. I don't know the actual term for the tool, but it the guys at a shop I know call it a "goat's foot" because it looks like a hoof with a small "u" in it to allow it to slide underneath the fastener insert.

It seems that Napa or some other auto-parts store should be able to supply this tool fairly inexpensively, it makes removal *much* easier and since it minimizes damage to the fastener you'll likely be able to use it again.
