at first i too thought that i'd just kill myself on one of those. for the first couple of years i was actually scared of the bike (then an FZR600), and got the butterflies every time i got on. but it's all up to you. motorcycle safety is 100% 'active' - it's all rider. that's why i never ride when i'm tired, not feeling well, or had even one beer. here are a few tips:
- don't get a hyperbike as your first machine. i would suggest a v-twin, they are easier to ride. suzuki SV650S is a great beginner bike for about $6K.
- when you ride, always assume nobody sees you. it is a good thing, because otherwise they'd screw you over on purpose (it happens).
- if you can't be 100% alert, don't ride.
- a bike, even a small one, will out-accelerate, out-brake and out-corner anything on 4 wheels. it can go places where cars can't (like between lanes). control every situation, and you're safe. lose vigilance, become a victim.
- never try to 'prove' anything when on a bike. too many people only prove that they weren't good enough.
it's a great sport! like with most things, attitude is everything... with the right frame of mind, it's something that you will enjoy for many years!! i hope you do it.
