Rode a V twin (Yamaha Virago XV700) for 10 years as my sole mode of transportation (rain or sunshine) and loved every minute of if. Excellent post above, re: alertness. Totally true. I, however, was forced to come to the realization that regardless of how good and careful a rider you are, there are situations you are bound to encounter where the little old lady in the '67 cadillac WILL take you out. Statistically, 90% of all motorcycle acidents will happen within the first 6 months of learning to ride. These are usually small accidents (dropped bike, etc. . .), but like with a car, if you ride it enough, you are almost destined to be in a major accident at some point.

Eventually, I gave it up when my daughter was born 3+ yrs ago (reluctantly).

If you get do get a bike however, you will love it.

I would also recommend a V-twin (low center of gravity and easy to handle), would get nothing smaller than a 500-700 (it will feel more solid/secure at highway speed), buy a used bike as your first ride (you WILL most likely drop your beautiful new bike--murphies law) and use a full helmet. Some morons just repealed the helmet law here in Florida and everyone is going bare. I am a physician and the number of significant facial/jaw/head injuries being seen now from what would otherwise be small accidents (remember the 6 month rule above) is amazing. I have personally had my mug saved by a full face mask from an accident travelling at about 10 miles an hour (blindsided by above mentioned cadillac).

Enjoy your ride, be careful, look out for your family (your own safety), and don't be an ass on the road, and you should be fine.
