I've been riding motorcycle for several years, mainly for recreation, but on a nice day will occasionally use it for commuting. (For current ride, see photo link below.) All the posts so far have been excellent regarding the safety aspect of riding a motorcycle, especially a street bike. We all agree that the temptation to "twist-the-grip" is high, but you just gotta use some >>>discipline<<< to keep the rubber side up (as they say). A few more tips:
* Stay out of the drivers' blind spots
* Ride in the far left lane or far right lane, if possible; not in between ... and DON'T lane split (legal in Calif. ... "dp", do you? Hope not!)
* Watch drivers' head movements, a BIG clue on what their next action may be.
* Leave plenty of space for that just-in-case moment
* Drive defensively ... never aggressively.

I belong to a local bike club here on the East side of Seattle and we hit the back roads of King county on our rides. So much fun ... got the roads to ourselves, and for the MOST part (I must be honest), ride within our limits.

If ya do the above, and what others have recommended, you'll enjoy years of motorcycle fun! Go for it! My thoughts ... FWIW.
