the code is only available from the dealer who may even have to call into BMW NA to get the code.

depending on your dealer, they may or may not give you the code over the phone. I suspect that my dealer would if they knew it was me calling - i.e. if my service advisor recognized my voice - but they might not.

I bought a CD head unit from someone to replace my cassette & when my father went to put it in, he went over to the dealer & they got the code for him, but other dealers are more strict.

the radio code was written in paint marker on the top of the old goofy OEM unit in my '87 E30, but that's not something that anyone would want to steal...
