Changing Amber Turn Signals to CLEAR! (archive)

Woke up early today and decided to switch out the front turn signals to clear ones.

Awhile ago, I had purchased some replacement turn signal bulbs at the local Kragen. The replacement part number in the book was 7506 for Sylvania clear bulbs. However, these bulbs did not fit into the socket.

Upon closer inspection of the stock amber bulbs, they look VERY similar to the rear tail light bulbs of my 1978 Datsun 280Z. Luckily, I had rear tail light bulbs for my Datsun (one of them had burned out).

So, I poppped them in and THEY WORK! (Sylvania Part #1156).

Here is a guide on switch out the amber colored turn signals on a 2000 M Coupe to clear. Please keep in mind that this modification is illegal as turn signals are required to be amber in color.

With that said, let's get on with it!

This is what we have stock. An amber colored turn signal. For those wondering, the front bumper side marker is also amber in color in stock. The picture above shows the European clear front bumper side marker which is not stock on a US vehicle.

This is the Sylvania part number (1156) that was used. You can pick this up at your local Kragen Auto Parts store. This was originally purchased as a replacement bulb for the rear turn signal of my 1978 Datsun 280Z. So, I was lucky that I didn't have to drive all the way back to the store to go hunt the correct bulb.

This picture shows the location of the bulb on the driver side. No need to remove the headlight assembly. You can access the turn signal portion easy enough with your fingers. Just turn Counter-clockwise and the bulb assembly pops out. Pull the bulb from behind so that it is exposed.

Here is the amber colored bulb exposed. Simply push the bulb in and turn counter-clockwise and remove.

Now here is the clear bulb exposed. Install is just reverse of the removal procedure.

This is what you get when the driver side bulb is installed. A nice clear turn signal light!

This is the passenger side turn signal bulb. Since the reservoir is in the way, I had to feed this bulb forward to gain access to it rather than pulling through from behind like the driver side bulb.

Getting to this is a little tricky. Use the hole next to the green sticker (see pic above) to gain twisting leverage on the bulb assembly. Once out, feed it forward, replace the bulb and put it back.

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!

Clear turn signal lights to match the clear front bumper side markers (if you already have those).

I hope everyone finds this helpful. For larger pictures, click onto the link below.
