Realize that as a new motorcycle rider, you very very most likely will drop the bike (it may be at low speed or even standing still, but almost count on it). 90% of accidents happen in the first 6 mos of driving. Get a bike you don't mind scraping up a bit, but not too small, as a larger bike will give you more confidence on the highway. I would say a V-twin, low center of gravity, easy to handle, like a late 80's yamaha virago xv 700 to 750. probably less than 1000.00 with low'ish miles, and pretty good looks. (Drop a superbike, and pay for the plastic.)
