like either of the bikes i recommended below, you can get nylon 'frame protectors' that do a really good job of keeping the shiny bits shiny if you were to lay it down. racers use those a lot, even (especially?) the pros. any of the fully faired models, i agree, plastic lowers are at risk (and those bikes get stolen for that very reason, replacement parts for kids who crash and can't afford legit prices). if your preferences run toward sport riding, start with a fairly sporty bike, which has the appropriate riding position. the cruisers are 'feet first' and don't really make a good mount to learn bike control on. just my opinion.
