As other people are suggesting, I would recommend getting a used bike too. However I have a couple reasons other than it ends up being cheaper to drop:
1) It gives you a chance to decide on exactly what kind of bike you want to end up dropping the big dollars on. You might start on a sport bike and decide you want a cruiser or even a standard because of the riding position.
2) Used bikes maintain their values quite well, so if you get one for a year, you probably won't lose much on it when you sell.

My recommendations for used bikes would be a 1987-1992 Kawasaki EX500 (half-faired sport bike, but standard by today's bikes) or a Suzuki GS500 (unfaired standard). Both are very light and easy to ride with enough power to get you around. However, you will outgrow them in a year's time if you do a lot of riding. Fortunately, they can always be found and there is always a market for them.

If you really need a new bike, I agree with dp and you should get an SV650. I have one as one of my bikes and it is fantastic!

Cheers!

Joshua.
