I suggest you have the car titled and tagged in your residence state of Texas from the beginning. Hopefully the title clerk at the Connecticut dealer is experienced enough to facilitate this for you. If not, do the legwork in Texas (getting and filling out the proper forms, etc).

Believe me (and I learned the hard way), you don't want them to tag and title you in Connecticut when you have to turn right around and do it in Texas. They may try to persaude you to take Conn. as it is easier for them.

My experience: I bought a car in California. At the time I was visiting there quite frequently and wanted my own car to use. I owned a place but my legal residence was in MD. Buying the car there freed me from driving one out from MD. Good idea...

But the dealer tagged & titled it in CA putting CA temp tags on it saying all I had to do was take the CA paperwork to MD MVA when I got back and they'd register it in MD for me and that MD had reciprocity with CA. Yes, to some extent but it was much more costly and troublesome. First, CA has an amazingly high sales tax on vehicles (something like over 8%) which I had to pay). Plus I had to pay tag & titling fees to the dealer($65) and some other CA fees.

I probably could have left it tagged in CA but I figured I would bring it back to MD some day. You face the same problem but sooner. You will be taking it back to your legal residence state of Texas. Texas law is probably like MD's and others where they give you 30 days to transfer the registration to Texas. Texas may let you have a vehicle titled in another state while being registered (tagged) in Texas. So you may legally be able to let them title it in Conn. MD requires both title and tags in MD.

So when I got back to MD I go to MVA and get the forms and show them my CA paperwork. First thing a major problem: CA does not give you a title (not even a non-cleared one with a lienholder on it) unless you buy the car out right. Even though I had put down over half the cost of the vehicle I had financed the rest ( a real low rate from GMAC). The lienholder gets the CA title. So I had to send a form from MD MVA to GMAC requesting they surrender the title to MD MVA for retitling in MD and then MD would send them their copy of the new MD title showing them as lienholder. Confusing, you bet! This took several months and this was only the first step. GMAC had to wait for the CA title to arrive in their office in Atlanta, GA. Atlanta GMAC HQ to send to MD MVA. It to be received and acknowledged, etc. Then when this is done (by the way my CA temp tags had expired) so the vehicle is sitting back on the street in CA with dead tags) filling out MD request for tag and title. Ooops I need the car to be inspected in MD (it's in CA). Got to fill out another form for a waiver until I get it back to MD. You will probably have to pay another Texas inspection fee. When it's all over and done with I have to pay MD excise tax (they did credit me with the CA sales tax to an extent); there was still a minimum tax I had to pay and transfer fees etc.

This is a long post but you get the idea you want it tagged & titled in Texas from the getgo. Then you can get Texas temp tags/registration and take them to SC with you to use at delivery. Although you may be able to just tag it in Texas, keeping a Conn. title. But if you can get it title in texas too. Will be easier when you sell it, especially if you sell to a private individual (Texas res.).

You will want to contact your Conn. dealer's Title Clerk so they can get working on this. You want the paperwork done before delivery so you can get your Texas temp tags & registration to use at delivery. You will also want to visit your Texas Dept. of Transporation and ask them what you need to do so you will know and get whatever forms you will need to have them properly filled out.

Good luck and please let us kow what you decide and how it goes.
