defroster problems? (archive)

Took my new Z3 3.0 coupe on its first "long trip" yesterday to PA. The weather was really bad but the car was great except for the defroster. When the windows started to fog up I immediately turned on the defroster and could not clear the windows. I stopped and checked my manual and learned that I had to turn the temp to the red for it to work. Well, being it was a really hot sticky day, I was not a happy camper. The windows finally cleared but it took forever. Is it possible that the defroster just will not work with the AC on? Anyone else experience this problem? Please help. Thanks, Stephen
