i went to 3 different dealers in st.louis and the first one made the problem worse by basically destroying the mechanism by slamming and prying.

the second, to their credit, temporarily fixed the problem by putting in all new parts.

that worked for about 2 weeks.

the third dealership was honest and said they knew about the problem, but there wasn't an official fix, but a BMW NA statement to owners to not "slam the rear hatch".

you can find a great fix from ron stygar. or you can see a more macgyver way of fixing it (and it has held for a year now) at www.mcoupe.net or www.lumenique.com.

the problem is: just poor design. there are two long metal rods held by flimsy plastic pieces and the rods fall out so the servo motor works but the rods have become disconnected to actually open the physical latch.
