1. The HK sound system is just plain lousy. It is a poor system in many ways including the quality of the sound, the optional trunk-mounted 6-disk changer, and the CD-display, all of which are not comparable to stock systems on cars costing much less. The Lexus IS300, for example, includes a far superior system as a standard feature. I recommend not purchasing the BMW system - go for an after-market product.
Comparing the sound to what can be obtained in a much larger cabin is not really fair and not puchasing the sound system is not possible. While the stereo (with settings "flat") is not very good it can improve somewhat if you fiddle with the controls: Fader to the rear 3 clicks, Bass plus 2 clicks, treble plus 1 works for me. Anyhow I think this is not really the best platform for High End Audio, for one thing the engine is too loud, and that's the music you ought to hear anyway! ;-)
Also, I guess I'm one of the few here who seems not to object to the gray dial faces. I'm not 100 sure yet but I have yet encountered a situation where they were too washed out to read effectively and I like the subtle effect of the gray when illuminated. But to each their own.
