BMW required use of the 10W-60 oil in early built E39 M5's & has since discontinued this recommendation, saying that the 5W-30 oil is fine.

interesting that they would go the other direction on the S54. I suspect that there will be supply issue with the dealers getting the new oil - I think it was hard to come by initially when the M5's came out & you'd think that it would have worked it's way out of the dealers by now as it's no longer required for the M5's.
