These cars are great right from the factory, so you are fine with waiting on the mods. Just make sure the car gets a good technical inspection beforehand (the school should require this), be well rested and keep your good attitude.
It's a good idea to lock yourself in the seat as tight as possible when you go out. The BMW belts can be locked and then you can slide the seat forward and lock yourself in. Ask someone there if you aren't sure how to do this. Being in a comfortable driving position and staying in the seat helps tremendously.
Bring with you extra oil, brake fluid, set of front pads, all weather gear, snacks, etc.
