Your M Coupe has a "smart" MRS (Multiple Restraint System) control unit.

It has internal crash sensors (accelarometers etc etc) and the airbags are design to go off depending how hard the impact it. Your Seatbelt pretensioners should've gone off though.

If you're driving alone, the passenger airbag will not deploy since there is no passenger which can be detected by the SBE mat (Seat Occupancy Detector).
