'01 vs '99 M Coupe (archive)

I drove an '01 M Coupe at Bob Smith today. Silver with 300 miles on it. I have a '99 with 13K miles as my daily driver. The '01 is feels stiffer, no creaks or rattles. Clutch is softer and bit more precise. I like those Michelin's; much more grippier than the Dunflops - the traction control doesn't engage quite as often as in my '99. Engine is sweet sounding, not as rough as the 240hp version. Also, no more continuous fan noise in the car. Handling feels the same; cuts the corners and straighten up with a touch of gas pedal just as my '99.

As far as power goes, feels just as quick than my '99. 315hp comes at 7900 rpm vs 240 at 6800 for the '99. Torque comes at 251 at 5800 rpm vs 236 at 4800 for the '99. Bottom line, if you're willing to shift at 7900 rpm, then the '01 will beat the '99 hands down. However, for normal driving, shifting at 6000 rpm, the '99 feels quicker. Moreover, throttle response in the '01 seems a tad bit slower; perhaps due to engine with only 300 miles in it.

Conclusion: I definitely don think it is worth the extra $10K to trade up to an '01.
