Pulling out of a gas station today, I shifted from 1st to second and POP!!, I'm holding my shifter nob about 1 inch above the rod. Sigh.

Not a good weekend. On Saturday, I started an autocross run and hit a cone with the right front tire. It whipped around and snapped off the valve stem off my wheel, and suddenly I don't have an autocross tire. My wife brought my street tires out and I finished my runs in the afternoon on them (significantly further behind the folks I usually run with, I think I finished 7th out of 10.) Then a friend put her Boxster S into the trees (this was an autocross with cones on a road course. We've run there before, but this weekend was horrible.) She was fine, but her car sat in there for 3 hours before we got a car that could lift her out. We'll see what the damage report is later... Sunday before I got there a Saturn went off at about the same place, but with less control and on the other side of the track. He *didn't* miss the trees, and the car got seriously bent. Again, the driver was ok. Finally a BP Corvette lost it and found the corner of a retaining wall (shoving the tires around it aside to get there) and attempted to ensure that the driver's side door doesn't move again. This one was drivable after the accident, unlike the other two (though the Porsche, in spite of taking out a few trees, was drivable long enough to get on a trailer. Wouldn't want to run it long, as one of the radiators was leaking (though not as bad as I expected), but it was also drivable, if at low speeds and short distances.

After the 'vette incident the event was cancelled. Why we had all these problems today when the previous 5-6 events there have been relatively painless is a mystery. I feel I got off lucky with just a flat tire.

At least Neil got to hear the Supertrapps.

David
