By reducing the brightness or color of your rear tail light, someone can effectively rear end you and it wouldn't be their fault. They can simply argue that they could not see your "modified" tail lights. As a result, they hit you. I've already seen one case where someone had replaced their rear tailights with those ALL WHITE lenses showing now red color at all. They were hit from behind and the person who rear ended them was NOT at fault because the rear end lights were modified.
So, whether you want to clear them out or smoke them is up to you. But if you get rear ended, keep in mind that the person behind can argue that they couldn't see your lights and they would have a good chance of winning.
