I think there are two things that must happen for there to be any hope of M Coupe values recovering to level of 1999 M3's.
1. The car must go out of production. Which we all know will happen next year. As long as buyers can get exactly what they want by ordering a new car, I think this hurts the used market.
2. All the used inventory in weak hands must be cleared out. It seems many M coupes were bought as third, fourth, fifth, ... even tenth cars for relative well off people during the stock market boom. Now, when those people need to get rid of car, the impractical sports car is the first to go, which seems to be the M coupe.
Once that happens, values might recover to 1999 M3 levels, however, it is definitely not a for sure thing.
My wife and I bought our 2001 because we love the styling and performance, even though we knew when we drove it off the lot we were throwing $10K out the window.
Life as a M coupe owner is extremely rewarding in every way, except financially.
