Word is that American production runs were severly delayed by a tendancy to snap crankshafts. I guess that there was a harmonic imbalance at low rpms, coupled with a manufacturing problem with the cranks. I suppose that this problem would carry over, but supposedly the manufacturing process have been fixed and it no longer happens. I don't know that this is what the failure was, but this is what was happening earlier.

Today, in the Washington Post, the car guy mentioned that BMW was experiencing early engine failures in the M3. Is this true? Has anyone heard of this, and if so, does it apply to the MZ's??
