I dig the coupe as much as the next, wouldn't change my mind on it, at the time I bought it (no M3 available, E36 body looking old...) I also have never owned a car I have had this much fun with... however....

The M3 offers the following advantages:
1.) Superiror suspension on all four corners. With less tweaking than we all do to the coupe, the M3 has the potential to be simply amazing.
2.) Superior utility. You can haul more things and people in it, so it is likely to be practical more often, to more places. Can even haul its own track tires and wheels, with no trailer, and still have room for overnight bags and helmet. Can take a real live harness and eventually a bolt-in roll bar without too juch fuss as well.
3.) More room means more long-haul comfort, which means long drives in a spectacular car, without a cramp in the hip, or worse.
4.) M3's simply hang on to their value very very well, means lower lease residuals (in relation to initial price), or higher resale depending on which way you go.
5.) For the money, the M3 is simply bristling with features the M coupe ain't got, from the differential, the 3.62 final drive ratio, 6 speed trans, phenominal seats, the interior is drop-dead, the stereo sounds better, way more options, etc.... for just a few grand more than the coupe, the M3 kicks its ass in the comforts and ammenities department!
6.) Made in GERMANY. Sorry, but the Z3 platform is just not a German built car. Too many glitches and rattles. German cars are still put together better. Persoanlly, I feel my 318ti is hung together better than the coupe. This has been a sore spot with me. I've never had a modern BMW with this many loose nuts, missing screws, rattles, buzzes, creaks, and mis-aligned components.
7.) Future availability of go-fast parts is going to favor the M3 in a big way, which is going to make a spectacular car even more phenominal.

Sorry, but I don't see the 2001/2002 M coupe value equasion at all. It's list price is not that far off the M3, and what it brings to the table is soooo much less. Bottom line, is if the 2-seat sports car thing isn't a primary consideration, the M3 is by far the hottest deal going.

Then, at the price of the M3, if 2-seaters ARE a primary determination, one HAS to consider the 2002 Z06 Corvette against the M coupe (I can guarantee I will be). The Z06 is a killer hot-rod package, 405hp, and HUGE rubber, coupled with a platform which is probably the penultimate Corvette, in a string of really quite good cars. This beast pulls like a locomotive, and corners at 1.0g! This car is in its own class, where the M coupe is just just no match (if performance is truly an important criteria). You also can't ignore the fact that the "Corvette" image is at least as strong as the "BMW" in the sports car crowd, maybe stronger in the real world.

The M coupe is showing its age in more ways than one. In a market which ups the performance anti as much as this one has, the M coupe is simply slipping away. BMW is making the right call to bag the project in May 2002. Great run, very cool car... which has had its 15 minutes of fame. With the intro of the new M3, the M coupe just slips a bit further out of the limelight.

Now... let the flaming begin!

KLW
2000 M coupe Imola/Imola
Pirelli P zero, Conforti, H&R/Bilstein and loving every minute of it, for now...

i have a deposit on both cars and have a tough time deciding between the two. i know the m3 is probably more practical since it sits 4 but i LOVE the feel of the m coupe. does anyone have suggestions on how they came about their decision. thanks

I just want to say this:
The E30 M3 is still considered by a lot of die hard enthusiasts as the REAL M car, praise by the European auto magazines as one of the BEST handling cars of all time (surpassing the E36 and E46), and what has it get ? --- a trailing arm rear suspension the same as the M coupe. Also automobile mag just drove the 5 M cars and concluded that the M coupe being the best. Also, I don't know about you folks, but a corvette will never cut it for me (talk about build quality), and I have never met anyone who think the corvette image is better than the M coupe ( a few rednecks, maybe). Lastly, corvettes got ROADHOLDING and not handling.
Fact is, they are all very nice cars and you should pick whichever is the best for you. Don't just buying anything that people told you is the BEST or the most trendy.
