european model 2002 m3 are already being sold with the smg2 gearbox. when the u.s. versions become available here they will have the option of being equipped with smg2 as well. the first smg gearbox was not sold in the u.s. this gearbox is a regualar six-speed manual (no torque converter) only shifted electrohydraulically (no clutch pedal). you can shift manually (shift paddles or stick) or put it into fully automatic mode. there are eleven different programs to choose the shift speed that you want from slow smooth sifts all the way up to 80 millisecond brutal shifts. there are also nice goodies such as a hill holder and acceleration assistant (for getting perfect full-throttle launches from a standstill). the six-speed manual does not fit in the m roadster/coupe and so the smg2 will also not fit. it would be reasonable to assume that in the distant future it may become an option on all m cars.
