So I was quite concerned about the integrated safety circuit on the key. I broke out the Caig Labs Deoxit D5, my mini screwdriver set, a few Q-tips, an old toothbrush and a blow dryer to help dry things out, and proceeded to dismantle everything. Not much water made it into either the key or the remote, which was surprising since I didn't discover the error until the spin cycle!
The good news is that everything is working great after a little cleanup, and now I know exactly how the key is assembled. The thing that surprised me is the security electronics must actually be built into the key shaft, preventing them from damage in case the key goes for a swim. The only circuit in the head appears to exclusively power the light.
