the car is a model year 2000 with a 3.23 ratio.
changing the rear tire size from 245/40 to a 265/40 changes the overall tire diameter which in turn changes your "effective" diff ratio.

245/40 equals 24.72" overall tire diameter
265/40 equals 25.35" overall tire diameter

this is a 2.55% increase in overall diameter as compared to stock which in turn makes the effective diff ratio change from 3.23 to 3.15.

How would wider tires change the diff ratio? The Overall change in diameter is about 1%, which could not lead to a rear end of 3.15. Unless of course he has a 2001, which comes with a 3.15 ratio.
my buddy just put on 265/40 on the rear and 235/45 on the front...the new rear tire size effectively changes the rear end ratio to a 3.15
