The fix: According to the service writeup "expansion valve stuck" , they replaced it and charged up the system again. (valve is part # 11-1-468-479). This is a BMW service item, and was covered by my CPO warranty. I had them check the A/C while I was having some other things fixed. I was not happy with the lack of cool air, especially at idle on hot days. I knew from this MB that a fix would be possible since other Florida Z3 owners were happy with the cooling system.
Unfortunately, the other thing they were supposed to fix is still a problem. My driver's side rear view mirror is vibrating with the wind at speed. This is distracting and does not happen with the passenger side mirror.
They replaced the motor that moves the mirror and that didn't realy help. I hope the factory techs can help me with it at HC.
Fix for sore back:
The non-adjustable lumbar support in our Z3s has caused a few backaches on long trips. I found a possible $20 solution. Staples office supply (???!) has a product for sale called a self-adjustable lumbar support. This is a simple zippered pillow enclosing 4 thin foam sheets of various thickness and size. The support is adjusted by unzipping and taking out any of these foam sheets you wish to. The appearance is a medium gray office-chair like material that is not a bad fit in my black interior. The size fits the seat perfectly in width, but the velcro strip to hold it in place is not going to work with our seats. I found it helps keep me less sore. Seems to keep the back more ventilated and cooler also. If you don't like it; would be easy to return.
