Take a short hose and with the engine running, hold it up to your ear to here different sections of the front of the engine. It will help you isolate where the noise originates.

Using this method back in the day, I was able to determine the #2 and #6 intake valves needed to be adjusted on my 280Z Turbo when I started to develop a ticky-ticky...
