I was driving home in my M coupe today and the check engine light came on when I was sitting at a light. I am pretty sure it was because the gas cap was not tightened. My brother put it on and I guess he did not turn it enough to lock it. I was drving at around 80-90 mhp for 2 hours coming home from a weekend out of town. So I think the vibration loosened it also. I checked the cap when I got home and it basically fell out when I touched it. The car did not do anything weird and drives the exact same. So, is there a way to reset the ECU to turn off the check engine light? In my old car I would just pull the positive battery wire for a minute then the ECU would reset itself when I reattached the cable. Should I take it to the dealer to make sure there is nothing wrong? Thanks. All error codes are stored. You can buy OBDII scanner/analyzer at www.OBD-2.com.
