I put my trust in Mr Valentine, who was the inital founder of ESCORT. Please go to the link below for his comments regarding "radartest.com" ... you just may re-think about getting the "8500".

The range of detection on both the Escort 8500 and the Valentine 1 is well beyond what is needed to protect you from all radar except laser. The only reason for laser detection is to tell you that you got nailed, since it will be a rare moment you escape laser. So, detection distance being a moot point between these 2 detectors, I still favor the V1 since it is the "Radar Locator"! Knowing WHERE the radar is coming from outweighs all other advantages the Escort 8500 may have ... in my book, at least.

My thoughts ... FWIW.
