A couple years ago he was riding down a steep, rocky section behind a few friends. At the bottom of the section was a ravine, probably 12 feet deep. If you didn't turn left before the big rock ahead of you, you were going for an ugly flight. Rick of course didn't look far enough ahead; he hit the rock, flipped over his bike and landed flat on his back at the bottom of the ravine. By all accounts, it should have put him in the hospital. The "thud" when he hit was painful to hear for everyone on the ride. Rick was lying still for a moment, then slowly started lifting himself. Miraculously, he shook it off. This type of event happens to him all the time and just adds another page in the book of his life. The stories Rick's friends have to tell about him do fuel some good laughs among friends, though.
I woke this morning to a phone call from one of my friends. Rick's luck, his strength, his intellect couldn't help last night. He and a friend, his business partner, had just closed a big deal. They were out celebrating, having a few drinks. They climbed back in his partner's new Corvette and were driving down a local street. It's unclear right now what happened, but Rick may not have been wearing his seatbelt.
The only facts I know are one man, his business partner, is in jail. The car is wrecked. Rick is gone.
To my friends and acquaintences on these boards, please, be safe. Be smart. And if you've made it this far in my writing, thanks for letting me vent.
