that article said the 3.0i is a great touring car, and the M a great sports car. Not to say the 3.0i is not a sports car, I just think the article did a great job at summing up their different missions so to speak, and nature. It's the little things that make one better than the other at somethings and vice versa. If he's looking to a replace a 911, the "little things" that make the M what it is might mean it is a better replacement. If I were him, I'd do just what the authors of that article did, which is drive both. They found the 3.0i to be an incredible car, but I think the M moved them a bit more on the sports car side.

Again, not to quibble, or argue, and I think both are great cars -- just slightly different purposes and character.

Read the Bimmer article comparing the 00 M coupe versus 01 Z3. basically they liked both cars and wouldn't say which one was the all out better car. The Z3 is lighter, quicker steering - etc. M coupe has stiffer suspension and slightly more torque. However a quick change of springs/shocks for Z3 coupe would give as good if not better handling. Yes the Z3 Coupe is a great car and a great performer. I like the idea of getting a new car, instead of a used one, that's why I got the 3.0i versus a used M. Plus it is cheaper to put on the road for insurrance.
I recently bought an '87 911 Coupe that is great, but frankly I would like some more creature comforts (ie AC that works, some assist on the steering, etc). I drive in lousy LA traffic and haul my 5 year old around (I understand I can get BMW to defeat the passenger airbag). Having a back seat would be nice, but I think I can live without it (and I love hatchbacks).

Any good arguments for the Z3 Coupe? I'm looking to spend under $40K, and closer to $30K is better. Does the sunroof had an inside cover (ie you can keep the sun off you)? New Z3 coupes can be had for well under invoice these days, as BMW can't seem to give the cars away...
