Mine failed back in 11/98, well before all of the fixes were advertised on this board. My dealership fixed mine using some hack, and it's held up for 3 years. I don't know what trick they used because I haven't had to open it up again.
But to answer the original question from my point of view, I'd have to agree. There are lots of little nits. But the driving experience is worth all of them.
My problems:
- Hatch release failed (fixed with cheap hack)
- Leaky rear windshield washer (fixed under warranty with BMW TSB)
- A/C not too great on really hot days (allegedly just fixed last week by replacing a couple of leaky seals)
- Gas gauge acted weird, but was fixed with software upgrade
- Rough cold idle, also fixed with software upgrade

I guess you have to realize you are getting near exotic peformance and styling with much better reliability than even a Porsche.
Still, the nits will bother you. For me:
a. bad bushing ins clutch pedal.
b. driver's side window motor failed
c. leaky rear winshield washer
d. rough start/idle (fixed with reprogram)
e. rear hatch has broken 3 times
f. gas gauge broken
That said, the dealer I go to has been fantastic (Performance in Chapel Hill NC). Even replacing the passegner side window motor as a precaution.
How is the Z3 Coupe/M Coupe for reliability? Any major/minor issues, or are they pretty reliable cars? Compared to for instance an Audi TT. I assume they are all going to require more trips to the shop than my 4-runner
