any word on the M1? (archive)

Funny, I was rereading this article from BMWcar (6/98 p.10) about BMW's desire to build a mid-range coupe. At the time, Dr. Reitzle had considered 3 projects, 2 of the aforementioned being a Z07 (ie. Z8) and a "lightweight special". A drawing of the "special" borrows many elements from the McLaren F1. Either Roundel or another magazine publication had alluded this car as the successor to the M1. Any word on this possibility/rumor? I'd imagine BMW has its hands full after dumping Rover, losing money on the Z8, and with all these rumors that the Quandt family is selling its share of BMW to Ford for a cool $31 billion (sourced from Reuters who sourced it from a British publication - check the e36 M3 page for the thread).
