I thought enough of the idea to explore some more with people in the business. Apparently there is a great deal done to the engine to make it conform to US emissions standards. Same motor modified for the M5. My sources within BMW claim that those modifications woould cost $40-50K plus six months to a year to get DOT approval, with no guarantee of success.

The car would alway be "grey market" without warranty and severely reduced resale value.
