As others have pointed out, the only reason why the owner of a Z8 might care about fuel economy is to figure out how often they have to stop for refueling. That time could be better spent enjoying the car by driving it...
I think it's safe to say that this applies pretty much to all high-end cars -- if you can afford to spend $100k+ on a car, fuel expenses won't be on your radar screen at all...
The one thing that you might be concerned about is the environmental impact of high fuel consumption, but even there, I find it hard to lose sleep over relatively high fuel consumption because of the small number of cars involved. BMW is currently planning to build 1500 Z8s: if each one of those survives for 200,000 miles, then we're talking a total of 300 million miles driven by the fleet of Z8s. At 15 mpg, that means 20 million gallons of fuel consumed over the car's entire lifetime.
Let's put this into perspective: 65,000 Totyota Camrys were sold in 1999 in California alone. If each of those are driven 20,000 miles a year, at an average fuel economy of 30 mpg (let's be generous here), we're talking 43 million gallons of fuel consumed per year. And the Camry is a fairly fuel-efficient car. Just think of all those SUVs that are out there in far greater numbers than even the BMW 3-series. Ford recently issued a very self-critical report at its shareholder meeting about its line of SUVs, both in terms of fuel efficiency and in terms of their tendency to cause greater injury during an accident to "the other guy"...
Kinda puts things in perspective, doesn't it?
