Every BMW dealer knows what their allocation is for the entire three-year production run of the cars will be. The smallest dealers with get one for the three years, the largest with get 9 or, in a handful of cases, 10. What the dealer cannot tell you, is when a specific allocation will come-up in the cycle until a production number is assigned. When that occurs, the initial production week is assigned and you can anticipate, at least at the current production rate, seeing the car in the USA about three months later. Color has nothing to do with it. The dealer will need to provide the color/interior selection after a production number is assigned but before production begins. There is usually about 60 days lead-time.

For you to get a car in December, it would have to begin production in September. If that timing is correct, your dealer should get a production number this month. If they do not, it probably means that you won’t see the car until 2001.

I've placed an order for a Z8 and submitted a $10k cahsier's check.

The dealer claims the car should be here by December, yet I have not been asked for details about color choice, etc.

Does anyone have a sense for how long the cycle time should be between placing a specific order for a specific color and actually getting the car? I'm concerned I'm getting the runaround. What would be the best thing to do to increase the odds of getting it quickly? Thanks for your help in advance.
