I believe its called cosmoline. BMW puts in on all their cars before shipping to protect the paint. The stuff gets washed off at the VPC after it arrives. Apparently they don't always do a great job of cleaning it all off (my 328 had some on the undercarriage too).

it's mostly on the plate under the engine and on some of the pipes in the middle of the car. should i be concerned? it's not wet so it isn't dripping. i touched it and it feels sticky so i assume it isn't oil. i can't tell what color it is because the substance is between moist and wet. maybe it's brown in color.

thanks for any help you can provide.
