I second the comments from Z8Mania. And have one more thought for you to consider. This is an uncommon car where, I believe BMW is striving to make the best car they can with in commercially reasonable limits. The windscreen, boot cover and Hardtops were all part of the package. All proved to have defects in field use. Rather than hold up delivery indefinitely they choose to ship the cars with Backorders for the Top and Screens.

I for one wished that they would have fixed more after the fact and delivered sooner. My car was built week 11, March 6, 2000. I didn’t take delivery until 8/18. That was one very long wait.

My sources tell me the same, hardtop delivery in late October, starting on the East Coast and working their way west. All delivered before Thanksgiving. I’ll put it on once to see how it looks and sounds, then hang it on the wall for the next twenty years (seal treatments aside).

Once you drive this car, you won’t worry about some damn top!!!

My Z8 is sitting in the showroom waiting for me to collect, and I have to admit to being rather excited! However I have some concerns ...
1) The hardtop has not been delivered with the car and the cold and rainy weather will soon be here. I think BMW have a bit of a nerve expecting customers to take delivery of a vehicle and pay full-price upfront when the car lacks a roof... ! Is this a piss-take or just arrogance ?
2) In Germany, the Z3-M Coupe is rumoured to have had better test circuit times than the Z8. How can this be so when the Z8 has 2 litres extra under the hood and a stiffer chassis ? ... so am I paying almost double for an 'inferior' performing car ? And why does the 3.2lt engine deliver 100 BHP per litre and the newer 5 ltr engine only deliver 80 BHP per litre ? Is it deliberately de-tuned to provide reliability ?
3) Does anyone actually know the DM (German) price of the car ? So I can determine whether we are being ripped-off in the UK .... at the Earls Court Car Show in Nov.1999, one of the BMW UK stand reps assured me that the UK price would be a direct conversion from the DM price plus country taxes and a bit extra to cover the cost of a 'drivers course'. Can anyone help here ?
Regards,
Adam.
