BMW does know how to automate the whole process. Look at their new 3 convertible. Everything folds flush with the roll hoops concealed in the rear headrests. The manual boot cover was an intentional act to keep with classic tradition. It has always been a pet peeve of mine with the M Roadster as well as the Z8. I don't like the choice that BMW made when they kept the "Boot" either, but it certainly wasn't enough to stop me from buying the car.

One of the things that BMW is famous for is making a statement with their design. In their view, they know more about cars than the public does. They rarely engage in consumer surveys and the like. If they had, the Z8 probably would look the way it does. All in all it is a stunning car, that always turns heads. I get as many looks from little kids riding in the back of the car next to me as I do from adults. Over half the people who comment on the car, don't know what it is, only that they like it.

How this kludge can be admired on a car at any price, yet on the z8, baffles me. If the cheap ass low tech corvette can design a built in cover for it's soft top which doesnt require getting out of the car and doing the brit sports car samba, why cant our supposed hi tech engineers at BMW? Even Porsche can now figure it out, leaving only jag, mg, the eurocrap, and alas us with this nonsense. grrrrr

Thanks for the detailed info and pic Bob.

Much appreciated. Looks like a much better setup than we have on the S2000.
