Under what conditions does the engine "ping". When it is cold, or a hot restart? Is it an actually ping? The VANOS mechanism is normally noisy at start up. This is like i said, "normal". But it will go away after about the first minute of engine operation. It makes a very "tinny" type sound.

Pinging at start up. Any ideas?
