is digital radio standard no the new 7?

my feeling is that people dont want to pay for something they already have for free. we have so many stations that you can usualy cycle through commercials. also if the reception of my digital cell phone is an indication, they will have to do a lot of real world testing (meaning any early adopter is really a beta tester) because digital signals dont roll off like analog ones- they just stop. I could be wrong- it would be interesting and Id enjoy having it, but Im just skeptical.
